Movement of Lone Stars | Adriane McCray

This multi-media exhibition by Adriane McCray centers on a film excavation of a Black collective memory with South Dallas starring as a supporting character. The film’s sonic landscape is shaped around interviews that took place in the quarantine lockdown of 2020, tracing the memories of various Dallas residents on the subject of their childhoods. Its use of collected archival footage, present-day photography, home videos, and aged photographs creates a tapestry that travels from moment to moment in stark contrast to the environment in which these conversations took place. It is a candid peak at the power of collective memory – one that tracks the movement of these Lone Stars and yields a fragile truth and sacredness of the Black community.

This exhibition is free and open for public viewing from Feb. 10 – March 24, 2023. An opening reception was held Friday, Feb. 10 at the South Dallas Cultural Center. See below for photos:

Adriane McCray
Adriane McCray is a filmmaker, wandering native Texan and University of Pennsylvania graduate. She is a 2021 Juanita J. Craft artist-in-residence at the South Dallas Cultural Center, in-house resident at The TX Studio, and fellow at BlackStar’s William and Louise Greaves Filmmaker Seminar and Film Independent.

Adriane’s work has been recognized by publications Glasstire and The Guardian, exhibited at Austin’s W&TW and Art214.

After supporting various writers, filmmakers, and video artists, Adriane began writing and directing films of her own. Her latest,Β Child Runaways, premiered at SXSW in 2022 and virtually on Short of the Week. She’s currently developing feature filmΒ State Champs Eat Free, a 2021 AFF Drama Semifinalist and 2022 AFS Grant Awardee. As a television staff writer, she’s contributing to an Apple+ limited series.
